A Sereia e o Marinheiro (The Mermaid and the Sailor)

The Mermaid and the Sailor

I decided to post an illustration, relatively old, that I made for a friend of mine that I never met in person. Her name, Clara.

Internet brings us virus, games, pornography, music, makes us waste our time, but above everything, brings us new stories, new people. Clara was one of the good stories that internet brought me.

In times of Orkut I was added by her, that liked my work. A long time later, I asked myself “Hey, who is this girl here?”. It was this question that made me talk to her to find out, and it was this conversation that made me want to know more and more. Summarizing, I made this drawing for Clara after some time and sent to her by mail in the day of her birthday.

Technic: pastel and crayon over canson.

Fria.

As mãos ágeis e trêmulas fechavam a torneira.

Rua miúda do oitavo andar.

Ele ainda encarava o espelho.

December 13th

He didn’t knew where that taste of iron in his mouth came from. The only view that he had was of a man in front of a dirty mirror. A pale man, with no expression. Visibly shaken. Below, in the filthy sink, a red stained whirl.

Running water. It was cold.

The fast shaking hands were turning off the tap.

Silence. He remembered everything. He didn’t believe what happenned. The man looked to the mirror. Eyes crossed in the solitude. From man to man, a speechless conversation. “What could I do right now?”. Coldness. The man in the mirror answered what was more than obvious: nothing. His eyes flowed the end.

The end…

The shouting horns had already been listened in the street. Tiny street from the eighth floor. It sounded like the chant of steel carrion birds getting close to the rotten meat. It would bring lights, flashes, questions and  TV. They would bring chaos to a scene that was already in chaos.

He was still staring at the mirror. Static. He could’t do anything else, could he? He was surrended before the universe, locked in that hotel bathroom. Eighth floor. They’re fast. In no time, running steps were getting close to the suite where he was. They were knocking. They ordered to open the door. Should he stay in the bathroom or should he leave? Outside, after the orders, the threat.

That was no reason for him not leaving the bathroom, after all.

The door was opened to the hotel room. One more time, the scene that he’d see would twist his mind.

In front of the bed, a woman in her knees cried. She was sobbing. Her delicate hand rested a pistol. Froze in front of the bathroom, the man had butterflies. On the bed, the image that him and the man in the mirror would never forget, the most inconsistent and unexpected one. The image that would disturb his lucidity. With clearness, he was seeing his own body on the bed, full of bullets. Lied down. Soaking the white sheet with blood.

It was really the end.

Fragile.

Powerless.

Motionless.

He was open.

Open and red like that rose that he gave to that woman in the day they got married,

"O Medo do Fim"

“End” and “fear” are words that always walk in pairs. Every “end” brings us some kind of fear. And every fear that rises, ends some part of you. In most of the times this part is called "faith".

Mother Earth

Not a long time ago, I loved the black and white and I just wanted this for myself. But I realized that the universe of colors is endless, and is possible to be learned like any other thing in life. Bare gift doesn't exist. It's a word that artists use to eliminate the competition. If bare gift really exists, its name is WILL.

Well, back to the drawing, relatively old, A4, technic: crayon and pastel over canson.

Eu fiz a capa e a primeira história, Picolé.

Ah! Breve posto a capa, o processo e a justificativa.

Today, December 16th, 2011, will be released the last edition of the magazine “Tudo com Farinha”, from Bahia.

“Tudo com Farinha” for who does't know, had its first edition in 1994. There were three more, until the project apparently came to an end in 2000.

When everything was lost, almost ten years later, a filosofer prophet of HQ's, spreads his ideias over the UNEB (Universidade do Estado da Bahia). His name, Alan Sampaio. Honestly, I believe that Alan is one of the most creative men I've ever met. With no doubt, I owe him my love and dedication to the HQ's. Well, me, along with Algoz Souza, were the first contamined by Alan, in a dreamy, informal conversation. Shortly after, Marco, Guaré, Enio, Gabriel Nascimento, the whole design course was thinking about HQ's. We founded then the “Laboratório de Quadrinhos e Ilustrações”(HQ's and Illustrations Lab).

Only with the arrival of professors Betonnasi and Isa Trigo to the group, the new edition of “Tudo com Farinha” became possible. The magazine includes new authors of UNEB and already established authors as André Leal, Cedraz, Hector Salas e Marlon Tenório, authors of the previous editions.

I made the cover of the magazine and the first story, “Picolé”. A story that I love. I try not to talk too much about my stories. I avoid explaining them. The reader is as capable as me of feeling something from it. The objective is not always to understand, but to always feel.

So, today, December 16th 2011, from 3 P.M., at Livraria Cultura at Salvador Shopping, Salvador city, Bahia, wil be released “Tudo com Farinha – A Saideira”

I'll be there.

Soon I'll post the cover, the process and the reason.

Execução do Tubarão (Making of the Shark)

Fim.

First the ink on the sketchbook, then Photoshop, solid colors, shadows textures and resolution. The end.

Chased by a Shark

I'm terrified of sharks.

I know that is an animal like any other, but to me is like a seamonster... And maybe for being in the sea, I'm so scared of it. Imagine the feeling of a surfer right to be attacked by a shark. One that sees that he is being surrounded by the beast. Imagine that this person knows that he must stay freezed to don't be attacked, but can't avoid the shaking of his legs and the accelerated heartbeating. Knowing that the shark delights itself with his fear. In this short time that the shark tastes him with its eyes, certainly he'll be thinking in his life, his end, in the pain. He will die and birth a thousand times before the attack.

Yes.

I'm definitelly terrified of sharks.

Some time ago I had a nightmare. A crazy one. I don't know if I can call it a nightmare because the euphoria excited me in it. That was action. Well, I'm gonna tell it.
It was a cold beach. Strong waves, strong streams, dark water. The sand was dark too. Up in the high, black rocks that were near the sea, it could be seen a mansion made from wood. I saw myself surrounded by friends (that I've never met) inside this mansion.

As in dreams things doesn't appear, just happens, with no time, no reference, all of us were surprised by a enormous angry shark, in the edge of his sanguinary fury. But wait... a shark? No, a legged shark. We ran while he devoured friends and shook them like a tyranossaurus rex. The shark entered the rooms breaking the doors as if they were made from styrofoam. No one could save themselves. For many times, the shark grabbed people by my side while I shook under tables or beds. Well, it was a dream, I had the conscience numb, but I remember that everybody died. That was just me left.

Me and it.

In a desperate attempt of dodging one of his attacks, I threw myself from the first open window that I saw. It was very high.I watched myself falling and hitting the sand with my chest. Soft. Gray. I looked behind.
Mansion and silence, nothing else.

I woke up

Recently I sketched the creature with ink on my sketchbook and finalized it on Photoshop to test the technique.

Praia com Chuva (Beach with Rain)

Amo praia chuvosa.

Beach With Rain

It seems like it was yesterday... And for as long the calendar says that it wasn't, I lie that it was.
This rough drawings shows one of the most special days on my yet short life.
Looking at them I can feel the cold water of the sea damping my feet, among the rocks. I can feel the rain that thickens fast, the wet sand, the coldness and the heat of instinct. I love the raining beach. I'm able, looking at this drawings, to see myself running in front of the girl and laughing. I can watch her drying herself with a towel and the first kiss on the sleeping net.
I can see it all
Can't you see?
Well, I know someone that can
I love you, Laila B.

O Barquinho (The Little Boat)

The Little Boat

To open this blog, I decided to post a naive illustration that I made. It also illustrates my current bussiness card. I love the sea, and I believe that it is the future of the world. I wished to put together faith, hope and the sea in an illustration, in a message that is sober, optimistic and kinda surreal. The result was this.
